Life Balance
I have never liked the phrase 'work-life balance' since it seems to apply that work and life are separate from and opposite to each other. (I always thought the opposite of life was supposed to be death - if that sounds like your job, then maybe it's time to consider making some changes!)
Rather that trying to trade off work and extra-mural time as if they are on opposite sides of a see-saw, it's better to think about keeping life-as-a-whole in balance. And this can be a challenge especially for people who are conscientious, ambitious and/or driven, and are fielding multiple simultaneous demands.
It's important to acknowledge that there are many ways to apportion the life balance pie, and individuals vary tremendously: one person’s balance might feel far off-kilter for someone else. So any discussions we have in this area have be about helping the client to find what works best for them.
Ultimately, success (in a career, in business and in life) can only really be assessed in a broad context, and over the long haul. Often I meet clients who are thinking almost exclusively over the very short run – their preoccupation is some immediate, narrow problem or goal. In those situations it is extremely helpful to give some time to identifying fundamental priorities and values, and to consider long term effects and consequences of decisions.
The life-balance dimension does not always come up in any given coaching engagement, but when it does, the benefits of giving it attention can be pervasive, affecting not just work performance, but enhancing many other aspects of life at the same time.
