Ensuring a successful coaching relationship
A key factor in the success of a coaching relationship is to clearly establish mutual expectations from the outset. We will discuss and agree an appropriate set of 'rules of engagement'. Experience has shown the following set to provide a good starting point:
1) Objectives and results
Our approach is results-focused, and starts with mutually-agreed objectives. The emphasis of each one-to-one session depends on, and is steered by, individual needs at the time in order to progress towards those objectives (we may gather feedback from varied sources - the participant's experiences, observations, 360 degree methods etc).
Face-to-face time can be used for goal setting, review of performance, to learn and practice techniques. Phone and email support can be used, for example, to discuss application of techniques to specific events or meetings that are upcoming or have just taken place, and to discuss other issues as they arise.
2) Confidentiality and (where applicable) feedback to management
There are typically two possibilities: either:
The content of coaching conversations will remain confidential between the coach and coachee (usually the case when the coachee is also the fee-payer)
Or:
The coach will provide periodic progress report to management and additionally on request. The content of those reports will be about behavioural goals and progress only. All other material discussed will be confidential unless expressly permitted by the coachee.
3) Transparency, honesty and openness
This is, of course, made much easier by the clear confidentiality agreement, and by the fact that the coach is not a member of the organisational power or political structure.
4) A commitment to move forward
External conditions (in the organisation, in life in general) are often less than perfect. The timing is almost NEVER just right. Coaching is pragmatic - rather than get bogged down in 'the paralysis of analysis', our aim is to discover and make practical improvements within a useful timescale.
5) Punctuality and Response Times
Within business hours, and unless prevented by unavoidable circumstances, both the coach and coachee agree to return messages within certain response times. These will be selected according to work patterns (A high-response option might be phone calls within 2 hours and emails within one business day, allowing for time-outs e.g. for holidays).
Summary
These agreements create a playing field - a set of boundaries within which we can work together to achieve high performance goals, and deal with any problems along the way. They also produce the commitment that tilts that playing field in the right direction to create success.
